So, What About the “Killer App”?

October 24th, 2006

One of the more unfortunate metaphors to come out of the Internet Boom was
that of the “killer app.” In reality, any application that popular could
either have such a lowest common denominator as to be useless or to be such
a stroke of genius (eBay, Amazon) as to be unpredictable. So forget the
killer app. Worry about serving your customers. That requires such unsexy
things as understanding what your customers need to do their business
better, or understanding how your customer sees your service. Are you, for
instance, a telephone carrier or a communications service. If the latter,
how do your customers need to communicate? How can you use your skills to
make your company indispensable to those communications needs? And how do
you take what you’ve learned and help the next customer, and the one after
that? Forget the killer app. Create value by helping your customers do their
own jobs better. Sermon over.
